The "Super Phaser II: Target Game" is Mego's precursor to today's Laser Tag. When light came through
the sensor it activated an alarm sound. It was actually quite an ingenious idea to do what Mego did
with the Phaser. Other companies' versions of the phaser are simply flashlights in the shape of the
phaser, but Mego did years before other companies' less than interesting attempts. The Mego Phaser
was also probably the best likeness of any Mego accessory.
I own the original artwork used on the packaging of the Mego Phaser (with Kirk, Spock and the
Cheron.) At a later date I will have an image of this painting on the site.
Another great idea was to make the communicators out of Walkie-talkies. My major complaint was that
they were blue instead of black. They came in two different package styles, boxes and blister
cards. The boxed version is more expensive on the secondary market. The Communicators also work
with the Command Communication Console. I wish Playmates would make a walkie-talkie version like Mego.
The Command Communication Console was a base station for the Communicator walkie-talkies above. Since
there was no counterpart in the series they are really bogus but, at least they work with the walkie-talkies.
The Tricorder was just a blue cassette recorder, but since the tricoder on Star Trek looked similar to a
cassette recorder, that was OK. It came with a cassette tape of Star Trek sounds; the tricorder is highly
sought after and brings a fairly high price.
Like Mego's Classic Communicator, it's ST:TMP Wrist Communicators really worked. They looked very much like
the props from the film, too. They did require a cord from a base unit as seen in the picture.
